 Wall-to-wall Tufted Carpet

Tufted carpets consist of cut and looped yarns poking through a backing. These carpets need to be produced on  a tufting machine, needles are attached to the machine and used to punch the yarns through to the backing.  Tufting machines have multiple settings where the pile tufts' height can be adjusted to be uniform or to have varying heights. Patterns can also be programmed into the machine and once again the heights can vary for the patterns. Tufted carpets can have different colors they can be a single color or varying colors mixed into a pattern. Stain resistance is more often than not used to treat tufted carpets. Tufted wall-to-wall carpeting is becoming increasingly popular as well as in accent rugs. 


Carpet Tiles

Carpet tiles is product seen quite often in the commercial area of design, especially places like offices, doctors offices, etc. In recent years they have also become popular in some residential spaces like play rooms or basements. These products have some distinct advantages that has caused them to grow in popularity. Carpet tiles are more cost effective than wall-to-wall carpeting, which is why the rise in residential homes has grown. They are also easy to install and replace, if one tile is stained you can easily remove the one tile and pop in a new tile without having to redo an entire room of carpeting. There are also many colors and designs available offering more inventory to choose from. Withstanding high traffic areas is where this product succeeds. These products are often looped with low piles which helps them have a higher durability and last anywhere between 10-20 years, when properly maintained. Luckily these tiles are a low maintenance item, with the low pile they tend to attract less dust and dirt. There are, however, some negatives of having carpet tiles. There is not always a seamless look to the tiles like there is with wall-to-wall carpeting. Even if they are from the same lot, sometimes the patterns will not line up even when properly installed. Carpet tiles do not hold up well in areas with high moisture or in rooms such as a bathroom, the tiles will hold the moisture and mold can grow. Likewise, since these tiles have joints between them, they do not provide waterproof protection in cases such as spills and pet accidents.

 Carpet padding is an important detail to flooring because it can help carpets and rugs last longer, protect the flooring underneath, and even make it more comfortable to walk on.  There is carpet padding and carpet cushions.  They are similar but different in their materials and usage.  Pads are more of the felt options.  The three major cushion categories are fibrous cushions, rubber and latex, and foam cushions. Fibrous cushions are made from natural fibers and are needle punched into the padding.  The most prominent fibers used is hair and jute.  This is an inexpensive option, but they do not last the longest.  Since they are made from natural fibers they age and crumble more quickly than a manufactured cushion.   Fiber Identification by Burning Fibers all have different compositions and they all react to fire in different ways. The ways that these fibers react can tell us what type of fiber it is. For instance cotton will burn but it will not melt, it will start to smell like burning wood. It does not leave a dark ash or smoke it is a white color. Since cotton is a natural cellulose fiber, all other natural cellulose fibers will burn with the same characteristics. Natural protein fibers, such as wool and silk, will burn but not melt, very strong burnt hair smell, when its removed from the fire it will stop burning, and leaves dark black beads once it has been burned. Rayon is partially a cellulose fiber and partially an artificial fiber but, it burns the same way as the cellulose fiber where it won't melt and smells like burning wood.  Polyester is an artificial fiber and burns very differentially than natural fibers.
